Gryphon Gala

LHS's Gryphon Gala XXV, "Simply Gryphon," will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Atonement Lutheran Church and School in Metairie. The Gala includes a silent auction and hospitality hour beginning at 5pm, followed by dinner at 6pm, and a verbal auction at 7:30pm. The attire is dressy casual. This is a great time to reunite with former classmates, teachers, and friends!!! Tickets are $60/person with tables of 10 available for $600. For reservations, contact Nicole Alleman at 504-628-7819. If you have items you would like to donate or for more information regarding the auction, please contact Lutheran High at 504-455-4062.

Early Release April 15

Due to bad weather, the activities scheduled to close out Student Council Week have been postponed. As a result, students will be dismissed from school Friday, April 15 at 1:00pm. We will still be having crawfish, but the afternoon events are rescheduled for Monday.

Monday, April 18 is a regular school day and students are expected to be dressed in school uniform. Students will be dismissed at the end of the school day to change into shorts and T-shirts, and participate in the class competitions.

Yesterday's Tomorrow Reunion Concert

Yesterday's Tomorrow was the welcome committee for Lutheran High School in New Orleans for many years. Through church performances and elementary school visits the musical mission had fans, and members, from all over the metropolitan area.

The singing group formed by Dr. Jan Lohmeyer in the early years of Lutheran High School, is reuniting for an exciting weekend of fellowship through the inspirational music it was known for during its 13 year existence between 1972 and 1985.

We encourage all YT and LHS alumni who would like to sing those favorite old songs to join us for this memorable weekend.

"Willy Wonka" is this weekend! Saturday's performance is at 7pm and Sunday's is at 2:30pm at Atonement's gym. Student tickets are $3 and will be available at the door; adult tickets are $5 available at the door.

We will also be selling themed concessions during intermission. You will also be able to have your picture taken with the Oompas and purchase a 5x7 print as a keepsake for $5.

Come support your fellow classmates as they perform! We can't wait to see you at the show!

Breast Cancer Awareness Event

October is breast cancer awareness month and the Lady Gryphon volleyball players have planned some events to bring awareness to this cause:

On Tuesday, October 26th, students may pay $2 to dress down. You may wear a pink T-shirt, jeans and your school shoes. For $3 you may wear closed toe and heel shoes that are pink or have pink laces. The price goes up to $3 and $4 if you wait until the day of the dress-down to pay.

Classes will compete during lunch later this month in "Minute to Win It Competitions". Overall winners will meet in a showdown on Tuesday, October 26.

Tuesday, October 26, is the "Think Pink" volleyball game. Come to Atonement to watch the Lady Gryphon volleyball team play St. Martin. Game starts at 4:30. Following the event classes will compete against each other in volleyball matches, including an alumni vs. staff game. This is also our "senior recognition" night for all seniors who participated in a fall sport.

All proceeds raised during these events will be donated to the New Orleans chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Class Penny War

This week, students are encouraged to bring in change and bills to contribute to the class penny war competition. Students may deposit change in their class jar before school and during lunch. Pennies add to a class's total with any other change or bill denomination take away points from a class's score.

All money raised will be donated to a recent LHS alumni, whose daughter has undergone heart surgery and is recovering, to be used for their medical expenses.

Bring in any change or other money you have to support this family!

LHS Service Day--March 11

Thursday, March 11th the students and teachers will be going to City Park for a service day.

School will begin at its regular time, we will leave and head over to the park to work on the grounds, hear a christian concert, have lunch and be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

This is considered a school day and is a requirement for your student to be present.

This is a work day so the students are encouraged to wear something that they do not mind getting dirty - only long pants, gym shoes preferably and a long sleeve shirt.

Each student should bring their lunch, we will provide drinks.

Homecoming 2009

This year's Homecoming football game is set for Friday, September 11, starting at 7:00pm. Come cheer on the Gryphons as they play Ascension Episcopal at Jefferson Playground field. Halftime events include the announcement of Homecoming court, as well as a routine performed by the cheerleaders. Friends, family, and alumni are welcome to attend!

On Saturday, September 12, the Homecoming dance will take place. This year's theme is "Waking Up in Vegas." The dance is from 8-11pm at the Holiday Inn Downtown-Superdome. All LHS students are invited to attend. If you are bringing a non-LHS student as a date, please fill out a guest pass form asap. Tickets for the dance will go on sale the week of the dance.

Students will also be participating in class activities during the week, including the traditional hallway decorating contest. Make sure to come on Wednesday, September 9, for the first PTL meeting and see the students work firsthand. Also on Friday, September 11, students will participate in a pep rally. This includes a class competition, annoucement of players and court, and cheers led by the cheerleaders.

We would like to hear from every family, and the church will be manning the phones 24 hours a day for us.

Drama Performance of Harvey

LHS's theater department will present "Harvey" on Saturday, February 7th and Sunday, February 8th in the gymnasium of Atonement Lutheran Church and School (6500 Riverside Dr., Metairie. Saturday will include a dinner at 6pm (by Chef John Heine), with the show to follow at 7pm. Sunday evening's show will begin at 7pm, and desserts will be sold during intermission. Boys Basketball Game Cancellation

The boys basketball game scheduled for Tuesday, December 23 versus St. Martin has been cancelled. The girls team will still be playing Hannan at Atonement, starting at 6:00pm. In addition, the boys basketball tournament at Ridgewood (scheduled for December 27-30) has also been cancelled.

Christmas Door Decorating

The Student Council recently held their annual Christmas luncheon and door decorating contest. Congratulations to Ms. Roy's Religion II (Three French Hens) and Ms. Dombrowski's Creative Writing (Two Turtledoves) classes who won the door decorating contest. Other honorable mentions include Dr. Wilson's Honors Algebra (Six Geese A-Laying) and Ms. Rost's Psychology (Four Calling Birds) classes.

On Wednesday, December 10th, the LHS Gryphons boys basketball team will be playing at the New Orleans Arena against Grand Isle at 2:30 pm. To attend the game, you must purchase a ticket that will also get you into the New Orleans Hornets vs. Charlotte Bobcats game at 7:00 pm. It is also free Hornets hat giveaway night. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Friday, November 21. Tickets are limited, so get your order in early. Contact the school office if you are interested in buying tickets.

LHS Day

LHS Day has been rescheduled for this Thursday (November 13). On this day, no formal classes will be held, but 7th and 8th graders from area Lutheran grade schools will be visiting for the day. Only those students who have signed up to volunteer are required to attend school. Volunteers need to be dressed in uniform and at school no later than 9am. They will be dismissed around 1:30pm.

This Saturday, September 30, East Jefferson General Hospital will be having a Baby & Child Expo from 9:30-1:30. Volunteers are needed to help children with music, balloons, arts, and crafts. See Ms. Steinke for the contact info on this exciting event!

Lutheran High will be joining First English for a service project this quarter. We will be conducting a food drive, and possibly a clothing drive. Volunteers are needed to donate food/clothing, and also to pack the food/clothing that is collected. The date has no yet been determined, but we will work with the schedules of the volunteers. If you are interested in helping with this event, sign up in Ms. Steinke's room.

Homecoming 2008

This year's Homecoming is set for Saturday, September 13. The day begins with the football team taking on Ecole at 1:00pm at Muss Bertolino field. Homecoming court will be presented at halftime. The dance begins that evening at 8:00pm and goes until 11:00. This year's theme is "Hollywood Hills." The dance will be held at the Marriott Hotel Lakeway, located just before the Causeway in Metairie. Tickets are $15 for a single and $25 for a couple. If students are planning on taking a guest from another school to the dance, you must fill out a guest pass, obtainable from Ms. Dombrowski in room 100.

At this year's Christmas concert on December 4th at St. John Lutheran Church, we are inviting all former choir members, including "Yesterday's Tomorrow" and any previous vocal groups, to join the LHS choir for the closing piece of the night--a medley of Christmas carols. We will meet at St. John at 6:00 p.m. on December 4th for a short rehearsal and reception. Then we will perform at the end of the 7:00 p.m. concert. Lady Gryphons Place Second in Ecole Tournament

Congratulations to the Lady Gryphons varsity volleyball team who took 2nd place at the Ecole tournament this past Saturday. The Gryphons finished the day with a 3-2 record. LHS defeated Crescent City, Reserve Christian, and Ecole. St. Martin's proved to be a tough opponent. We lost the first game 25-16, but fought back in the second to win 25-23. The third and final game saw the Gryphons lose in a close 13-15 loss. Congratulations to the team!

Eagle Scout Project

On Saturday, April 28, Nicholas Fenner from Troop 223 led a group of volunteers in completing his service project toward the rank of Eagle Scout. His project included fixing the flagpole and landscaping and painting an entrance to the school. Only 2% of all young men who join the Scouting program reach the rank of Eagle Scout. Many astronauts and Presidents are Eagle Scouts. A couple of notable Eagle Scouts include the first human to step on the moon, Neil Armstrong, Steven Spielberg, and John Tesh. By the way, Bill Gates made it to Life Scout. Thanks to Nicholas and crew the entrance looks great!

Service Project

Recently Lutheran High students under the direction of the Student Leadership Team supervised by Ms. Steinke conducted a clothing and food drive to benefit local charities. Over 1,400 pieces of clothing were collected and donated to Covenant House and 214 lbs. of food items donated to Second Harvesters Food Bank.

In another project students assisted the local Thrivent chapter in bagging items to be used in hurricane relief efforts at St. John's church in Laplace.

We did it again - a three peat!!! Our 2006-2007 Track and Field team performed admirably in the annual Region 3-B Track and Field events. We extend our congratulations to Candis Camarigg, Princetta Cummings, Rachel Gaston, Joey Marroccli, Brianne Roberts, Kelsey Shaffer, and Joshua Simon for an outstanding season.

We are pleased to announce that Princetta Cummings has advanced to the state level. She placed first in the 100 hurdles, third in the 200m dash and third in the 100m dash. The state track meet will be held Thursday, May 3 on the LSU campus. We wish her much success as she prepares for the state competition.
